August 2018 Farm Update

Before the summer slips by in another beautiful blur, I wanted to share a little update and some behind the scenes shots of what’s been happening here on the farm.

Out in our trial patch, we’ve been growing lots of exciting new flower varieties. I’ve been taking loads of detailed notes of all the top performers and narrowing down the list of our favorites to offer in our 2019 Floret Seed line up. There are so many incredible new gems (currently hovering around 95!) that we’ll be adding in 2019. I can’t wait to share more about them with you soon.

Erin and Jill at Floret writing seed descriptions
Chris has been busy documenting all of the magic, while Jill and I have been writing like the wind and trying our best to help show and describe the flowers in their most beautiful light. This process is my very favorite part of the job.

We are so lucky to be able to do this work and share what we learn here on the farm with the world. I don’t take a second of it for granted.
Amazing Grey poppy at FloretOne of the most popular and beautiful discoveries in this year’s trial patch has been Shirley Poppy ‘Amazing Grey’.

We will have lots of seeds for this treasure in January, but make sure you are on our mailing list to be notified when these beauties are available!

In addition to our flower trials, we have also been experimenting with edibles and have a 50+ tomato variety test underway along with dozens of ornamental squash and pumpkins.

With both, our aim is to settle on varieties that are both delicious and well suited for arranging and decorating. I can’t wait to show you what we’ve discovered so far.

Floret barn renovation

Next door at the vancouver flower shop, the old leaky barn has been undergoing a big renovation.

Goodbye moldy drywall, leaky skylights and rat infested insulation. Hello new windows, watertight roof and plenty of space for our shipping department to spread out.

Behind the scenes at Floret
In addition to conducting our extensive variety trials, writing new seed packet descriptions, preparing for our much anticipated fall bulb launch and adding new resources to our upcoming Floret Online Workshop, we’ve also been hard at work on Book #2. This time, the focus of the book will be on natural floral design and working with local, seasonal product.

This project has been a true labor of love and my hope is that it will both helpful and inspiring. I know that spring of 2020 feels like forever away, but I promise, this book will be worth the wait.
Floret ScholarshipsI’m amazed by how many of my long standing dreams we’ve been able to accomplish in the last handful of years. It would never be possible without all the hard work, love and dedication that the amazing members of Team Floret pour in.

We have so many exciting things in store and I can’t wait to share more with you in the coming weeks.

If you aren’t already on our email list, be sure to sign up to get all of the details!
